This artwork was part of my Painting a Day Challenge. When I moved to New York City and got a job, I was afraid I would be too tired to paint and start to lose my studio practice. To push myself to get in a habit of making work even when I'm tired, I challenged myself to make a new painting every day for a month, ideally in no more than 2 hours. It worked. I would come home around 8-9 pm, and start painting immediately. Once I was painting, I found my motivation and forgot how tired I was. It's good to show yourself what you're capable of every now and then. The reference I chose for this painting was a photo I took at Monet's gardens in Giverny, France. I was really excited by the result and would love to paint more of these, although why redo what Monet has already so masterfully done? Observing this artwork, I realize that it's the reflections that make it successful. Light has a unique power to transform a painting and take it into an almost spiritual realm.
