This original mixed media artwork is part of my Mosaic collection. This group of artworks explores the spiritual beauty of nature by spotlighting one particular plant in a "holy" setting to highlight its sacredness. I painted the background with fuschia acrylic paint then drew the contour lines with pastel pencil. I then painted in the leaves and flowers using ink. I also filled the “mosaic tiles” in the background with ink, carefully using very thin layers to develop an even fade. I painted each tile about 3 times to get it right. Lastly, I applied gold leaf. The gold leaf is sealed to prohibit tarnishing and the whole artwork is sprayed with a pastel fixative. This piece references religious paintings from the Medieval and Renaissance period with the primary figure in the center and the two donors or patrons who commissioned the artwork in the bottom corners, all adorned with gold halos. I’ve used Rhododendron blooms instead of religious figures to denote the spiritual connection that I experience in nature and the sacredness of that interconnection. The composition was inspired by the symmetry and organic forms found in art nouveau which is one of my favorite art movements. The mosaic background was inspired by both the mosaic artworks I see in museums in Italy as well as the intricate cobblestone masonry patterns I find there. I use the mosaic background as a way to transport the viewer and imply that we are in a sacred space between the physical world and the next.

Important Care Instructions

Chalk pastel is used in this artwork. A protective spray has been applied, but touching should still be avoided. One reason I love using pastels is the way its delicate nature symbolizes the fragility of our ecosystem and how easily human touch can disrupt it. The artwork should be hung in a dry, safe place where it is not at risk to be rubbed against accidentally.
